I’m a queer traditional and digital craft worker based in the Cairngorms Nationals Park, in the highlands of Scotland.
In English my name is Innes and I use he or they pronouns. In Gaelic I go by Aonghas and use e or iad.
I used to make really big video games and now I make yarn.
My background is in video game development, blending creativity with technical discipline. As part of the initial team of four behind BAFTA winning sci-fi epic No Man’s Sky, my work spanned a range of fundamental systems including the game engine, visuals, simulation and gameplay, with a particular focus on procedural generation. I presented our work at major international events including GDC in San Francisco, Melbourne International Games Week and more specialist technical conferences. After a sabbatical to walk the length of the United States from Mexico to Canada I returned to contribute to upcoming title Light No Fire, before leaving to focus on more local, tangible projects.
My craft work in leather and wool also draws from these blended worlds, combining heritage and tradition with considered use of modern technology. I’m inspired heavily by my time in the outdoors as a backpacker, walker and paddler, as well as by my politics, transness and queer community.
I’m guided by my ever-expanding awareness of the Gaelic landscape, having begun learning the language as an adult and continuing to study it at undergraduate level. I progress my language and craft skills in tandem, drawing from Gaelic sources where possible to shape my perspective and practical technique.
